County gives divorce exams to troubled couples

2018-05-25

An East China county has stirred discussions online for holding divorce exams that aim to give married couples seeking to split a chance to think it over.

Since Sunday, couples in Donghai county, Jiangsu Province are being asked to complete a series of questions about their marriage and reasons for divorce.

Civil affairs bureau workers will consider their answers when reviewing the divorce request, guancha.cn reported.

Questions include specifics like wedding anniversary, spouse's birthday and division of housework, to more personal questions, such as detailing their fondest memories together and the nature of their disagreement.

According to the test, a husband and wife who score 60 (out of 100) and above have a chance to reconcile, while scores below 60 signal the marriage is in real danger.

The test stirred discussion on social media, with some saying the test interferes with a couple's right to seek a divorce.

The voluntary exam aims to give couples an opportunity to reconsider their decision, the Lianyungang municipal government responded in a Sina Weibo post on May 21.

Based on their results, civil affairs workers urged the husband to reconsider the decision.
